Technical Director

Ascension Community Theatre is seeking a passionate, creative, and experienced individual to join our team as Technical Director.

As ACT continues to grow and strengthen its commitment to delivering high-quality live theatre, we are excited to welcome a Technical Director who will play an essential role in bringing our productions to life.

This part-time, paid position combines artistic creativity, technical expertise, and collaborative leadership to ensure consistency and excellence across our productions.

​

Position Overview

The Technical Director works closely with the Artistic Director, Board of Directors, production teams, and volunteers to oversee scenic design, set construction, and workshop operations.

​

Serving as both a creative leader and skilled craftsperson, the Technical Director guides scenic elements from initial concept through final execution, helping transform artistic visions into engaging theatrical environments.

​

This position also plays a vital role in strengthening ACT's production processes, supporting volunteers, and fostering a collaborative environment for theatre artists throughout our community.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee scenic construction and set builds for ACT's five annual productions.

• Design scenery for at least two productions per season.

• Collaborate with production designers to develop scenic plans that align with ACT's facilities, budgets, and technical capabilities.

• Organize and supervise volunteer workdays and scenic construction activities.

• Provide instruction and guidance to volunteers in scenic construction and painting techniques.

• Maintain an organized workshop, tool room, paint storage, and inventory of scenic elements and properties.

• Oversee the maintenance and proper use of shop tools and equipment.

• Participate in production meetings, pre-production planning, and technical rehearsals as needed.

 

Qualifications

Ideal candidates should demonstrate:

• Professional-level experience in scenic design, construction, or technical theatre.

• Experience in a professional theatre, performing arts center, or academic arts environment is strongly preferred.

• Proficiency with scenic construction techniques, hand tools, power tools, and related equipment.

• Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Adobe, or comparable programs.

• Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative leadership skills.

• The ability to teach, mentor, and work effectively with volunteers.

• A commitment to artistic excellence and community theatre.

Employment Type: Paid Contractor 

Compensation: $10,000 annually 

Reports To: Artistic Director and ACT Board of Directors
